PMP® vs scrum master certification: which fits your role?

A scrum master certification fits a role serving one Scrum team; the PMP fits leading projects end to end, with the months to prove it. The entry gates show the split: the Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) requires a 16-hour course, Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I) requires only the exam, and the PMP requires 24 to 60 months of project leadership plus 35 training hours (issuer pages, as of October 2026).

02The scrum master reflex on a PMP question

At work

As a scrum master you clear impediments, protect the team's focus and let the team decide how to do the work. Nobody hands out tasks.

On the exam

In our read, the same servant-leadership instinct carries into the PMP's agile scenarios, minus the trap of never deciding anything. Then come the parts a scrum master rarely owns: roughly 40% of items are predictive, and governance, procurement and finance each have their own tasks in the outline.

The ruleKeep the scrum reflexes, and add the project manager's view of everything around the team. The leadership side is on servant leadership for the PMP.

03Role fit

PSM I suits you if you already know the Scrum Guide and want a lifetime credential with no class and no renewal fee. The CSM suits you if you want the class itself, taught by a trainer, with the exam attempts included. The PMP suits you if your job reaches past one team into scope, schedule, budget, contracts and stakeholders, and you can document the months.

For an agile credential that asks for documented experience, PMI's option is the PMI-ACP®; see PMP vs PMI-ACP. The full field, from the CAPM® to PRINCE2®, is in the certification overview.

04Scrum credentials and the PMP

Does a CSM or PSM I count toward the PMP?

Neither counts as project experience. CSM course hours count toward the PMP's 35 training hours only where they cover topics in the PMP outline, and from December 1, 2026 live classes count only from specific provider types (PMP Examination Content Outline, as of October 2026).

Do scrum master certifications need renewing?

The CSM does, every 2 years with Scrum Education Units (SEUs). PSM I is a lifetime certification with no renewal fee (Scrum Alliance and Scrum.org, as of October 2026).
