Exam fact
Is the PMP® exam hard?
Demanding, mostly because of length and style: 180 questions over 240 minutes, most of them scenario-based, and about 60% set in agile or hybrid projects (PMP Examination Content Outline, as of October 2026). PMI® publishes no pass rate, so any difficulty ranking you read is an opinion.

Exam length
240 min for 180 questions
Four hours, 180 questions, two 10-minute breaks, and roughly 60% of items drawn from agile or hybrid approaches. PMI's own line on the 2026 update, from its new-exam page, is “Not more difficult, just more relevant.”

01When the first practice set humbles you
Years of running projects and a rough first practice score sit together more often than you'd expect. The exam asks you to choose a response under time pressure, for a project you've never seen, and that is a separate skill from delivering your own. It's learnable, and quicker to build than the experience you already have.
02What makes it demanding
Length
Four hours of careful reading tests stamina before it tests knowledge. PMP questions and time has the breakdown: 170 scored questions, 10 unscored, two 10-minute breaks.
More than one answer that would work
In a scenario item, several options can describe something a competent manager might do. A useful order to judge them by, which is our heuristic and not PMI wording: assess the impact, engage the people involved, follow the agreed process, and escalate only past a defined threshold. Case or scenario and graphic-based items, both new in 2026, add reading on top.
Agile and hybrid throughout
The approach mix runs through all three domains, so a People question can be set in the middle of a sprint. The split itself is on PMP questions and time, and how to tell the approaches apart is on predictive, agile and hybrid.
No number to aim at
Without a published cut score you can't study to a target. The PMP passing score page covers what PMI reports instead.
03Where experience gets in the way
Office habit
On your own projects you know the history, the politics and who to call, and you fill gaps in a status report from memory.
Better first step
The stem is all the context you get. Facts it leaves out don't exist, and an option that only works if you assume them is a guess.
The ruleAnswer from what the stem states, and nothing it doesn't.
04Making it less hard
- Work each domain in the PMP practice test cold to find your gaps, and keep the timed PMP mock exam for the final weeks.
- Read the note on every option after you answer, including the ones you got right.
- Spread your weeks by domain weight with the PMP study plan: Process 41%, People 33%, Business Environment 26%.
- Practice in agile and hybrid settings on purpose, not only in the predictive ones you may know from work.
